Running a technology company is like running a ship. The Captain is ultimately responsible for everything. The Individual sailors have their roles, routines, and respective disciplines. Each individual is crucial. If the lookout fails, the entire ship's in peril. Generally speaking, however, as long as morale is good, supplies stocked, ship's in order, everything runs well. The crew can accomplish the mission and everyone is rewarded. A ship is a great metaphor for a well run technology company or any company.

The big difference between being a ships Captain and a technology CEO is that technology is harder to navigate. There are too many socio-economic variables and scientific advancements to accurately predict where and how technology will evolve in the long-term . Almost everything in technology changes, fast. There are some crucial fundamentals however, just like in sailing. Just like in sailing, the fundamentals are critical for technology organizations looking to survive the long-term.

What are the fundamentals? What are the constants? Simple: people. The people, their experience, education, character, commitment, understanding, accomplishments, and unique skills are the fundamental building blocks. It is people who write protocols, design hardware, own and operate companies who profit from technology. The people and evolution are the fundamentals of technology.

It is my role as the CEO of OpenSourceSun.com to ensure focus on these fundamentals, and provide an atmosphere where this is easy. When we take care of our people, our people take care of themselves, our company, and we adapt with change. Our people are priceless. Ask anyone who works here. Everything else can be replaced.

I take these principles from a lifetime of living and loving life in the technology business with some of the most vibrant characters a man could ever meet. I learned this from great and hard man in the Canadian Navy Reserve. It is the road less traveled by to be sure, but it is the only road for me and all my friends. Thanks Dad!

We're changing the World holding the Open Source in our hands. We enjoy what we do.

Sincerely,

Robert Marshall Jackson

PS I look forward to meeting you and sharing the love and wealth of the Open Source. The Sky is the limit.
